Ltda. started operations in 1989 translating
and localizing computer products for Apple
Computer, Autodesk, Aldus, Software Publishing
Corporation and others. In 1994 it focused
on computational linguistics research and development
and in 1996 it launched Ortógrafo, which
remains as the most advanced Spanish spell
checker.
In 1998 Microsoft licensed SIGNUM's spell
checker, thesaurus and hyphenator for its entire
product line including Office 2000. In the
same year SIGNUM and three other leading computational
linguistics companies for French, Italian and
Portuguese formed the Natural Language Understanding
Consortium (NLUC) so as to perform joint marketing
and development projects. In 1998 Alcatel bestowed
SIGNUM with the first price for technological
innovation in Ecuador and the second place
in Latin America.
The new electronic version of the famous
Spanish Dictionary "Diccionario de Uso
del Español de María Moliner" was
developed by Signum. All the information in
this landmark dictionary, together with advanced
electronic dictionary functionality, comes
in a practical CD presentation that you can
buy and use form your computer.
SIGNUM's current linguistic client base includes
dictionary publishers and software companies
in Canada, France, Indonesia, Ireland, Spain,
and the USA. SIGNUM's end-user products are
used in 30 countries, whereas its engines inside
third party products cover millions of users.
